Bio-Electric Therapy

Wake up the muscles pain switched off.

Targeted electrical stimulation to relieve pain and reactivate weak or inhibited muscles — most effective inside a broader OrthoRestore™ rehab plan.

Bio-Electric Therapy

Bio-electric therapy applies a low-level electrical current through pads on the skin. It is used in the clinic to help manage discomfort and support muscle activation as part of a wider treatment plan.

Who it’s for

Those with weak or inhibited muscles after injury, or pain that limits training and daily activity.

How it works

Targeted electrical currents stimulate nerves and muscle fibres — modulating pain signals and re-activating muscles that switched off after injury.

What it treats

  • Muscle weakness after injury
  • Acute and chronic pain
  • Post-surgery muscle inhibition
  • Nerve-related pain
  • Rehab plateaus

What a session involves

Pads are placed around the area and the current is raised slowly until you feel a tingling or light tapping — never pain. A session runs about 15 to 20 minutes, usually while you are already in for other treatment.

When to see a doctor instead

It is not used over a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, over broken skin, or during pregnancy without medical advice. See a doctor rather than booking a session if pain follows a significant fall or accident, if you have numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, if you lose control of your bladder or bowels, or if pain comes with fever, unexplained weight loss or night pain that wakes you. These are signs that need medical assessment first.

Questions patients ask.

A tingle or a light tapping. The intensity is set by you — if it is uncomfortable, it is turned down.

Managing discomfort and encouraging muscles to activate around a treated area. It supports the rest of the programme rather than standing in for it.

No. Tell the clinic about any implanted device before treatment so an alternative can be used.

It works on the same principle of applying current through the skin. The difference in clinic is that the placement, intensity and duration are set by a practitioner as part of a wider treatment plan.

About 15 to 20 minutes, normally while you are already in for other treatment rather than as a separate appointment.

Occasionally mild redness where the pads sat, which settles quickly. Tell your practitioner if your skin is sensitive or you have had a reaction to adhesive pads before.

Not without medical advice, and not over the abdomen or lower back in pregnancy. Tell the clinic before treatment so an alternative can be used.
